Cipe Pineles (1908–1991) was a pioneering Austrian-American graphic designer and educator. She taught at Parsons School of Design (then New York School of Fine and Applied Art), holding roles such as Lecturer in Fashion Merchandising (1940–1970s) and Head of Publication Design (1963–1970s). Simultaneously, she served as art director for major magazines like Vogue, Glamour, and Seventeen, breaking barriers as the first woman in many roles.
Her teaching emphasized design fundamentals: color theory, typography, poster design, and advertising. She integrated fine art into commercial media, collaborating with artists like Andy Warhol. Beyond academia, she consulted for Lincoln Center (1961–1972) and designed promotional materials for Parsons.
Pineles’ legacy includes pioneering roles in the Art Director’s Club—first female member (1943) and first Hall of Fame inductee (1975)—and posthumous recognition by the American Institute of Graphic Arts (1996).
