Elzbieta Matynia

Elzbieta Matynia is Professor of Sociology and Liberal Studies at The New School for Social Research, where she founded and directs the Transregional Center for Democratic Studies (TCDS). She holds a PhD from the University of Warsaw (1979) and focuses on democratic transitions, gender politics, and cultural sociology, particularly in Eastern Europe and global contexts. Her work examines democratic erosion, civic agency, and the role of art in political reflection.

Her research interests include Political Sociology, Democratization, Gender and Politics, and Social Memory, emphasizing how cultural and historical shifts shape democratic futures. Her publications analyze performative aspects of democracy, dissident intellectualism, and revolutionary movements.

Matynia's articles and books consistently explore themes of democratic decline, civic engagement, and post-communist transitions, with recent works addressing global authoritarian trends and the fragility of liberal institutions. Her scholarship integrates theoretical rigor with empirical analysis of social movements and political performativity.
