Lara Penin is Professor of Transdisciplinary Design at Parsons School of Design, The New School, where she co-founded the Parsons DESIS Lab focused on design for social innovation and sustainability. She served as Director of the Transdisciplinary Design graduate program (2015-2019) and co-leads the Graduate Minor in Civic Service Design. With a PhD from Milan Polytechnic University and architecture degree from University of São Paulo, her work bridges design practice and social theory.
Research examines service design applications in public contexts, particularly libraries and community development. Funded projects include Rockefeller Foundation-supported 'Amplifying Creative Communities' and Brooklyn Public Library outreach initiatives. Publications establish frameworks for worker-centered design and democratic service systems.
International engagements include keynotes at Service Design Days Barcelona and advisory roles for Politecnico di Milano's Service Design program. Professional affiliations include DESIS Network and Service Design Network, where she chaired the 2015 Global Conference.
