Christopher T. Dole is a Professor of Anthropology at Amherst College, specializing in medical anthropology and Middle East studies. He holds a PhD from Case Western Reserve University, with postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School’s Department of Social Medicine and Harvard University’s Department of Anthropology. His research focuses on the intersections of religious healing, secularism, psychiatric care, and the socio-political impacts of catastrophe. Dole has conducted fieldwork in Turkey and Boston’s Arab Muslim communities, examining themes of loss, devotion, and the psychological effects of counter-terrorism surveillance.
His notable works include Healing Secular Life: Loss and Devotion in Modern Turkey (2012) and the co-edited volume The Time of Catastrophe (2015). Current research explores humanitarian psychiatry and the emotional aftermath of disasters in Turkey. He teaches courses such as 'Medical Anthropology,' 'Culture, Affect, and Psychiatry,' and 'The Social Life of Catastrophe.'
