Byron Joseph Good, PhD, is a Professor of Medical Anthropology at Harvard Medical School and Harvard University, holding dual appointments in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine and the Department of Anthropology. He has been affiliated with both departments for over 40 years and served as Chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine from 2000 to 2006.

Research Interests: Dr. Good focuses on how cultural forms shape the experience and response to mental illness across diverse societies, including Indonesia, Iran, Turkey, the U.S., and China. His work bridges theoretical frameworks in medical anthropology, cultural psychiatry, and subjectivity studies. He is renowned for his seminal book Medicine, Rationality, and Experience (1994), which explores the intersection of illness, healing, and human subjectivity.

He co-directed major initiatives such as the Freeman Fellowship Program and Fogarty International Center Training Program, fostering global mental health leadership. He currently teaches graduate courses in Harvard's Anthropology Department and the M.M.Sc. Program in Global Health Delivery.
Labs & Collaborations: His work is rooted in interdisciplinary collaborations, including research partnerships with institutions in Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, and East Africa. These programs have trained hundreds of mental health professionals globally.
