Arthur Kleinman is the Esther and Sidney Rabb Professor of Anthropology in Harvard University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), Professor of Medical Anthropology in Harvard Medical School's (HMS) Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, and Professor of Psychiatry at HMS. He also served as Victor and William Fung Director of Harvard's Asia Center (2008–2016). A physician and anthropologist, Kleinman is renowned for pioneering work in medical anthropology, cultural psychiatry, and global health. His research focuses on global mental health, social medicine, caregiving ethics, and China studies, with a recent emphasis on social technologies for aging in Asia.
Education: BA and MD from Stanford University, MSc in Social Anthropology from Harvard, and psychiatry training at Massachusetts General Hospital. Awards include the Franz Boas Award (AAA's highest honor), Wellcome Medal, and honorary doctorate from York University. He has authored 7 solo books, co-authored 4, and edited 29 volumes, including Rethinking Psychiatry and The Soul of Care.
Research spans 40+ years, with >350 journal articles and grants from NIH, NSF, and others. His work bridges anthropology, medicine, and policy, addressing social suffering, healthcare ethics, and global health equity. Current projects include Harvard's Social Technology for Global Aging initiative and eldercare studies in China.
