Arthur Michael Kleinman

Arthur Michael Kleinman is the Esther and Sidney Rabb Professor of Anthropology at Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences and holds concurrent roles as Professor of Medical Anthropology at Harvard Medical School and Professor of Psychiatry. He is a globally renowned psychiatrist-anthropologist, bridging clinical practice, cultural studies, and global health. His work focuses on global mental health, social suffering, caregiving ethics, and China studies, with over 40 years of research in Asia and beyond.

Education and Roles: Graduated from Stanford University (BA/MD), earned an MA in Social Anthropology from Harvard, and trained in psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital. He chaired Harvard’s Department of Global Health and Social Medicine (1989–2000) and directed Harvard’s Asia Center (2008–2016). Currently leads the Harvard Social Technology for Global Aging Research Initiative.

Research Interests: Kleinman’s work integrates anthropology with medicine, emphasizing cultural dimensions of healthcare, moral experiences of illness, and systemic reforms for aging populations. Key themes include global mental health, medical humanities, and ethical caregiving. His China-based research spans four decades, examining health systems and social change.

Awards and Recognition: Recipient of the Wellcome Medal, Franz Boas Award, and Guggenheim Fellowship. Honorary doctorate from York University. Recognized with Harvard’s Distinguished Faculty Award and mentoring accolades.
