Greg Beckett is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Western University, specializing in sociocultural anthropology with a focus on Haiti, humanitarianism, and disaster studies. He holds a PhD from the University of Chicago (2008). His research examines themes such as political imaginaries, everyday life in post-disaster contexts, and the intersections of colonialism and modern governance. Beckett’s work critically engages with humanitarian responses, state formation, and the socio-political dynamics of marginalized communities.
Key research areas include Haitian citizenship, urban anthropology, and the philosophical dimensions of crisis. His publications analyze topics ranging from sovereignty and migration to the cultural construction of disorder. Beckett’s scholarship emphasizes ethnographic depth and theoretical innovation, particularly in understanding how ordinary life shapes political and social systems in contexts of extreme vulnerability.
His articles explore themes such as global catastrophe, the abolition of racial hierarchies, and the paradoxes of humanitarian aid. He has contributed to debates on postcolonial statecraft, urban marginalization, and the existential dimensions of crisis in Port-au-Prince. Beckett’s work bridges critical theory with empirical fieldwork, offering nuanced insights into under-theorized aspects of Caribbean and Haitian sociocultural landscapes.
