Christopher P. Hanscom is a Professor in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at UCLA, specializing in modern Korean literature and comparative literary studies. He holds a B.A. in English Literature from Cornell University and both M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from UCLA's Department of Asian Languages and Cultures. He has held postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard University and taught at Dartmouth College.
His research focuses on the intersection of social and literary forms, colonial literature, race and empire dynamics, and the relationship between scientific thinking and literature in modern contexts. Notable works include Impossible Speech: The Politics of Representation in Contemporary Korean Literature and Film (2024) and The Real Modern: Literary Modernism and the Crisis of Representation in Colonial Korea (2013).
His articles explore themes such as postcolonial identity in South Korean fiction, the role of scientific discourse in colonial Korea, and transnational literary studies. Hanscom’s interdisciplinary approach bridges literary analysis with historical and cultural studies, emphasizing the socio-political dimensions of cultural production.
