Dr. Christopher Oliver is a Senior Professor of Practice jointly appointed in Sociology and Environmental Studies at Tulane University, holding the Jill H. and Avram A. Glazer Professorship in Social Entrepreneurship. He directs the Critical Visualization and Media Lab (CVML) and holds affiliations with Urban Studies and City, Culture, and Community programs.
His research examines urban political ecology, environmental justice, and the spatial distribution of environmental hazards in urban environments, with particular focus on housing policies, neighborhood toxicity, and redevelopment impacts on marginalized communities. Current projects utilize geospatial analysis and visual methods to document environmental injustices in New Orleans.
Dr. Oliver teaches courses spanning social problems, urban ethnography, environmental policy, and organizational behavior, including senior seminars that integrate community engagement with visualization techniques. His book 'The Structural Causes of Unemployment' analyzes global labor market transformations.
Administrative leadership includes developing interdisciplinary initiatives through the Taylor Center for Social Innovation and Design Thinking, funded by William L. Duren '26 Professorship and Glazer endowment supporting community-engaged visualization projects.
