Professor Christopher John Smith is a Professor in the School of Classics at the University of St Andrews, where he has been since 1992. He served as Director of the British School at Rome (2009–2017) and is currently seconded to UKRI as Executive Chair of the Arts and Humanities Research Council. His academic qualifications include a DPhil from the University of Oxford and an MA (Hons).
His research focuses on early Roman archaeology, social and economic development before 500 BCE, comparative studies with archaic Greece, and transformations in Republican Rome. He also explores historiography, fragmentary literature, and the reception of Roman political thought. Current projects include a Leverhulme-funded study on Roman kings, combining archaeology and social science methodologies.
Key awards include Fellowships from the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2023) and Royal Historical Society (1997). His publications span over 129 works, with recent contributions analyzing the Social War, forensic infrastructure in ancient Italy, and pre-Roman urban development. He has edited volumes on fragmentary Roman orators and antiquarians, reflecting his interest in recovering marginalized voices from antiquity.
Grant activities include the Roman Kings project (Leverhulme Trust, 2017–2020). He advises on editions of Fragmentary Roman Historians and Orators and sits on editorial boards for journals like Atlante Tematico di Topografia Antica. Future research priorities include Roman antiquarians and political thought reception.
