Christopher Smith is a Professor of Ancient History at the University of St Andrews and currently serves as Executive Chair of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), UKRI. He previously held leadership roles, including Director of the British School at Rome (2009–2017) and Dean of Arts at St Andrews (2002–2006). His academic career spans over three decades, with promotions including Senior Lecturer (1998) and full Professor (2002).
- Educational Background: BA Hons (First Class) in Literae Humaniores from the University of Oxford (1984–1988), followed by a D.Phil. in Classics (1988–1992).
Research Interests: His work focuses on the archaeology, history, and historiography of archaic and classical Italy, particularly Roman oratory, early Roman archaeology, and topographical studies of Rome and Italy. He leads major research initiatives, including a Leverhulme Trust-funded project on early Roman kingship (2017–2020).
