Robert Morstein-Marx

Robert Morstein-Marx is a Professor of Classics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He specializes in Roman history from the middle Republic to the early Empire, focusing on political culture, imperialism, and historiography. His research examines institutions, rhetoric, and political dynamics during the Republic's crisis. He holds a B.A. from the University of Colorado (Classics, History, Philosophy), an Honors B.A. from Oxford (Literae Humaniores), and a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley.

Key publications include Julius Caesar and the Roman People (2021), Mass Oratory and Political Power in the Late Roman Republic (2004), and co-editing the Blackwell Companion to the Roman Republic. His recent work reinterprets Caesar's role in the Republic’s collapse, emphasizing the People’s centrality to Roman politics.

Research interests center on political values, institutions, and crises in the Late Republic, alongside Cicero, Roman rhetoric, and classical historiography. He advises graduate students in these areas.
