Christopher Humphrey is a Professor of Accounting at the Alliance Manchester Business School, University of Manchester. He specializes in international financial regulation, auditing practices, and accounting education. His research focuses on audit standardization, public sector accounting reforms, and interdisciplinary approaches to accounting. He has held leadership roles, including head of the former Manchester School of Accounting and Finance and the Accounting and Finance Group. He serves on numerous professional committees, including the ICAEW’s Auditing and Assurance Faculty Committee and the European Accounting Association’s Board.
Education: BCom, MA(Econ), PhD, ACA (Chartered Accountant). Career highlights include academic roles at Leeds University Business School and Sheffield University Management School prior to returning to Manchester in 2001. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and recipient of the BAFA Distinguished Academic Award (2015).
Research interests include the intersection of accounting with sustainability goals, austerity measures, and global aid frameworks. He has supervised doctoral theses on topics like auditing in Kuwait, international IFRS adoption, and gender dynamics in accounting professions. His editorial affiliations include Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal and International Journal of Auditing.
Awards include an Honorary Doctorate from Lund University (2017), multiple best paper awards, and recognition for contributions to UK accounting academia. He actively engages with global institutions like the World Wildlife Foundation and the Royal Society of Arts through initiatives like ICAEW’s Audit Futures program.
