Christopher F. Gelpi is Professor of Political Science at The Ohio State University, where he also serves as Director of the Mershon Center for International Security Studies and Chair of Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and specializes in international conflict resolution, American civil-military relations, and public opinion regarding military force.
His research investigates sources of international militarized conflict, terrorism perceptions, crisis bargaining norms, and peace education impacts. Current projects explore American public attitudes toward military interventions and experimental modeling of international conflict behavior.
Gelpi has authored influential books including The Power of Legitimacy: The Role of Norms in Crisis Bargaining and Paying the Human Costs of War: American Public Opinion and Casualties in Military Conflicts. His publications frequently appear in top journals such as American Political Science Review and International Security.
Recognized with the Denver T. Loupe Best Presentation Award, he leads research initiatives through the Conflict to Peace Lab and directs graduate studies on international security topics.
