Christoph-Martin Geilfus is a Professor in the Department of Soil Science & Plant Nutrition at Hochschule Geisenheim. His research primarily focuses on plant nutrition, soil science, and plant responses to environmental stresses, particularly salinity stress and ion transport mechanisms.
His research interests center around plant physiological responses to environmental stresses, with particular emphasis on:
- Apoplastic pH dynamics and its role in plant stress responses
- Ion transport and homeostasis, especially chloride and nitrate interactions
- Stomatal regulation and guard cell physiology
- Plant responses to salinity stress
- Nutrient management and plant nutrition
His research employs advanced techniques including proteomics, metabolomics, and physiological measurements to understand plant stress responses at molecular, cellular, and whole-plant levels. He has investigated these processes in various plant species including maize (Zea mays), broad bean (Vicia faba), and wheat.
Professor Geilfus leads or participates in numerous research projects funded by various organizations including the European Union, German Research Foundation, Federal Office for Agriculture and Food, and others. Current projects focus on sustainable agricultural practices, biochar applications, soil carbon storage, and the impacts of climate change on plant systems.
His scientific contributions include significant insights into how plants respond to salt stress, particularly through changes in apoplastic pH, ion transport mechanisms, and stomatal regulation. His work has implications for developing crops with improved stress tolerance and more efficient nutrient use.
