Miroslav Nikolic is a Professor at the University of Belgrade's Institute for Multidisciplinary Research, where he has served as Scientific Advisor since 2007. His career includes leadership roles as Assistant Director for Science and Education (2020-2023) and Head of the Department of Plant, Soil and Nano Systems (2018-2020). He earned his PhD in Agricultural Sciences (1999) from the University of Belgrade, with postdoctoral research at the University of Hohenheim (Germany) and University of Udine (Italy).
His research focuses on plant mineral nutrition and stress physiology, particularly silicon's role in enhancing plant resistance to abiotic stresses like mineral toxicity, salinity, and nutrient deficiency. His work explores silicon's interactions with essential nutrients (iron, phosphorus, sodium) and its applications in sustainable agriculture through mechanisms like apoplast modification and antioxidant response activation.
Recent publications highlight silicon's temperature-dependent biogeochemical roles, nutrient interaction networks in stress conditions, and practical applications in cereal crops and vineyards. He serves on editorial boards of journals like Frontiers in Plant Science and Plant and Soil, and leads the International Silicon in Agriculture Society. His scientific awards include the Serbian Ministry of Science's First Prize (2004) and multiple DAAD scholarships.
