Karl H. Muehling is a Professor at the Institute of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science within the Faculty of Agricultural and Nutritional Sciences at Kiel University, Germany. He has held this position since 2007 and is recognized for his work at the intersection of ecology, plant production, and molecular plant biology. His research group focuses on plant-soil interactions, particularly the nutritional physiology of crop plants and soil fertility dynamics.

He has mentored over 165 graduate and undergraduate students as primary supervisor and leads a research group comprising postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, and technical staff.
He has received competitive funding from DFG, BMEL, DAAD, industry partners, and the Ministry of Agriculture of Schleswig-Holstein. He has held significant administrative roles including Dean of his faculty (2020-2022) and leadership positions in scientific societies like the German Society of Plant Nutrition and the German Agricultural Research Alliance.
