Dietmar Geiger

Dietmar Geiger is a Professor at the University of Würzburg, where he heads the Chair of Botany I - Plant Physiology and Biophysics. His research group investigates transport mechanisms in plants using biophysical techniques, focusing on ion channels, nutrient distribution, and stomatal regulation. Key projects include plant nutrition in saline soils, sugar-transport mechanisms, and anion channel functions in guard cells.

Research interests center on:

• ABA-dependent stomatal closure signaling pathways
• Evolution of stress-response mechanisms in plants
• Multi-sensory integration in guard cells

Geiger's CRC/TR166 project elucidated molecular mechanisms of stomatal closure, reconstructing ABA signaling pathways in heterologous systems. Current work explores intertwined signaling responses to pathogens, CO₂, and reactive oxygen species.

He leads a research team at the Julius von Sachs Institute of Biosciences, with laboratory facilities at the Biocenter campus. Collaborative projects include evolutionary studies of stomatal regulation across plant species.
