Christoph Leyens

Christoph Leyens is Professor and Chair of Materials Technology at Dresden University of Technology's Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering since November 2009. He serves as Director of the Institute of Materials Science (2011–present) and heads the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS Dresden (2018–present), following his tenure as Vice-Dean of the Faculty from 2009 to 2016.

Leyens' research centers on fundamental materials development for industrial applications, emphasizing how tailored materials enable modern technologies in aviation, transportation, and energy systems. He investigates biomimetic approaches where materials science intersects with biology, focusing on self-healing mechanisms, structural principles inspired by nature, and intelligent material systems with significant potential for future engineering innovations. His work bridges theoretical materials research with practical manufacturing technologies across diverse application domains.

Leading both the university's Institute of Materials Science and the Fraunhofer IWS Dresden, Leyens oversees major research initiatives in materials technology.
