Christoph Kalter is a Professor of Modern History at the University of Agder (UiA), Norway, affiliated with the Department of Religion, Philosophy and History. He holds a PhD (2010) and venia legendi (2019) from Freie Universität Berlin. His research focuses on decolonization, transnational entanglements, and postcolonial migrations, particularly in French and Portuguese contexts. He has authored influential books like *Postcolonial People* and *The Discovery of the Third World*, and his current work explores European languages in postcolonial African nation-building (1955–1980).
His academic career includes roles as Visiting Assistant Professor at UC Berkeley, Guest Professor at Sciences Po Bordeaux, and collaboration in the FCT-funded *Constellations of Memory* project. Awards include the Walter-Markov-Preis (2011) and Geisteswissenschaften Translation Funding (2012).
Teaching responsibilities include leading UiA’s PhD program in history. Research interests span migration, global history, and postcolonial memory. He contributes to public discourse through podcasts, lectures, and outreach, addressing topics like Portugal’s retornados and the historical role of language in African nation-building.
