Tonje Holte Stea is a Professor in the Department of Health and Nursing Sciences at the University of Agder (UiA) in Kristiansand, Norway. She leads research within the HAMS (Health, Behavior, Diversity, and Social Inclusion) research group, focusing on public health, epidemiology, and behavioral health. Her work spans topics such as childhood obesity interventions, mental health in adolescents, dietary habits, and the health impacts of social determinants like socioeconomic status and adverse childhood experiences.
Her research often employs longitudinal and population-based study designs, leveraging large datasets such as the HUNT Study and the Pro-Saude cohort. Key areas of interest include interventions targeting youth not in employment, education, or training (NEET); the effects of social media on adolescent mental health; and the relationship between nutrition, reproductive health, and chronic disease prevention.
Stea has collaborated extensively with institutions in Norway and internationally, contributing to studies on health promotion strategies, healthcare service utilization, and the role of family-based interventions in mental health. Her work bridges clinical, behavioral, and population-level perspectives to address pressing public health challenges.
Her interdisciplinary approach integrates epidemiological methods with behavioral science, emphasizing translational research to inform policy and practice. Notable projects include evaluating the National School Fruit Scheme’s long-term effects on dietary habits and collaborating on randomized controlled trials for obesity and metabolic interventions.
