Dr. Christina Kelly is a Research Fellow in the School of Natural and Built Environment at Queen’s University Belfast, specializing in Sustainable Built Environment. She leads projects such as the EU/UKRI-funded PERMAGOV and EPA/Marine Institute-funded SHIP, focusing on marine governance, coastal transition management, and sustainable port development. Her work integrates policy, planning, and stakeholder engagement to address environmental challenges.
Christina holds a BSc in Environmental Planning, an MSc in Environmental Systems, and a PhD in Environmental Planning from Queen’s University Belfast. Her doctoral research (2017) explored integrated coastal management in Ireland, supported by Irish EPA and Government funding. She has 10+ years of professional experience as a Marine Spatial Planner and consultant.
Her research interests emphasize sustainable blue growth, marine biodiversity, and coastal policy. She contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDGs 14 (Life Below Water) and 15 (Life on Land). Recent work includes conceptualizing biodiversity mainstreaming in the European Atlantic and evaluating port sustainability pathways.
Christina collaborates internationally, presenting at conferences and participating in coastal transitions research networks. Her projects receive funding from EU, UKRI, and Irish EPA. She has authored peer-reviewed articles and policy reports, focusing on marine spatial planning, coastal policy, and stakeholder participation.
