Benedict McAteer is a Research Fellow at Queen's University Belfast's School of Natural and Built Environment, within the Planning Department. He contributes to the EU-Horizon-funded MarinePlan project, focusing on marine biodiversity conservation through spatial planning. He teaches environmental planning and research methods at the undergraduate level and serves on the editorial board of Ocean & Society. His research emphasizes sustainability, participatory approaches, and knowledge communication in marine governance.
Key collaborations include international projects in Spain, France, and Canada, addressing challenges in ecosystem-based management and renewable energy development. His work intersects with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to life below water, sustainable cities, and climate action. McAteer has presented at conferences, such as an oral presentation on sustainability transitions in ports and shipping (2020).
Publications span marine spatial planning frameworks, citizen science professionalization, and fisheries governance. His 2022 PhD thesis explored citizen science's transformative potential in marine governance, supervised by Prof. Flannery and Prof. Murtagh. Recent articles analyze procedural justice in wind energy projects and intergenerational participatory research frameworks.
McAteer's work bridges academic research with practical policy, emphasizing community engagement and reflexivity in environmental decision-making. His contributions include developing assessment tools for ecosystem management and advocating for inclusive marine governance models.
