Christina Hicks is a Professor in the Political Ecology group at the Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University (UK). Her research focuses on the relationships between individuals, societies, and nature, particularly in small-scale fisheries, conservation, and climate change adaptation. She holds adjunct/affiliated roles at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies (James Cook University) and the Center for Ocean Solutions (Stanford University).
Education: PhD from ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies (James Cook University, 2013), MSc in Tropical Coastal Management (Newcastle University). Key awards include the 2019 Philip Leverhulme Prize in Geography and ERC Starting Grant (FAIRFISH).
Research interests span fisheries governance, ecosystem services, and climate resilience, with fieldwork in Africa and the Pacific. She collaborates with organizations like WorldFish, Wildlife Conservation Society, and Seychelles Fishing Authority. Current grants include the Nippon Foundation Ocean Nexus Program and Pew Fellowship.
Teaching includes convening LEC 225: People and the Sea. She leads the Tropical Futures research challenge and serves on the editorial board of the Western Indian Ocean Journal of Marine Science.
