Dr. Richard Hamilton serves as the Melanesia Program Director at The Nature Conservancy, affiliated with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies headquartered at James Cook University. His work focuses on coral reef ecosystem dynamics, human-environment interactions, and climate change resilience. He leads fisheries and sea turtle conservation programs in Melanesia, manages a 20-staff team, and engages in public fundraising and stakeholder communication.
Research interests include coral reef resilience mechanisms, multi-scale ecological dynamics, and socio-ecological systems. He has contributed to studies on coral bleaching, climate adaptation strategies, and the impacts of environmental changes on vulnerable communities.
His publications highlight advancements in understanding coral genetics and climate vulnerability in tropical fisheries. Hamilton acts as a spokesperson for conservation efforts, appearing in media and collaborating with governments and donors to advance conservation agendas.
