Patrick Smallhorn-West is a Research Fellow at James Cook University, jointly appointed by the Wildlife Conservation Society, WorldFish, and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies. His work focuses on the interplay between conservation and food security, particularly in small-scale fisheries across the South Pacific, including Solomon Islands and Tonga.
- PhD (2020), BSc with 1st Class Honours (2014) from James Cook University
- Current research evaluates conservation NGOs' policies for human rights in small-scale fisheries using a Human Rights Based Approach
- Prior research examined fisheries co-management resilience in Solomon Islands and led Tonga's national coral reef monitoring program
- Collaborated with NASA on post-volcanic coral reef recovery studies in Tonga
His interdisciplinary approach combines coral reef ecology with fisheries science, community-based management, and impact evaluation. Recent publications address fisheries co-management, marine protected areas, and human rights integration in conservation strategies.
