Professor Christiane von Bary serves as Chair of Private Law, Private International Law and Comparative Law at the University of Zurich since October 2025. Previously, she worked as an Academic Advisor at LMU Munich from March 2019 to September 2025 and completed her Habilitation at LMU Munich in January 2025. She is actively involved in the international legal academic community, notably as co-organizer of the upcoming 11th Journal of Private International Law Conference to be held in Zurich in April 2027.
Her research focuses on family and inheritance law from national, international, and comparative perspectives, with particular emphasis on Swiss and German law. Professor von Bary examines these areas through both theoretical frameworks and practical applications in cross-border legal contexts, contributing to the evolving field of private international law.
Professor von Bary has received the dissertation prize of the Munich Bar Association for her doctoral work. Her research has been supported by the German National Academic Foundation during her PhD studies, and she was selected as a member of the Young Academy of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences from 2020-2025.
She maintains an active role in graduate education, supervising master's theses at her chair and welcoming academic collaboration opportunities. Professor von Bary has conducted research at multiple international institutions including the University of Cambridge's Family Law Centre and the University of Bern, demonstrating her commitment to international legal scholarship.
