Christian Wenzel is a historian specializing in early modern European history, particularly the French Wars of Religion and historical security research. Since 2022, he has been the Head of Subproject A01 - Hostages in the Early Modern Period - within the CRC 138 "Dynamics of Security" at Philipps-Universität Marburg. He previously held roles as a Temporary Academic Councillor (2020) and Research Assistant (2018) at the same institution.

His research spans the cultural and political dimensions of security in early modern France, focusing on confessional conflicts, dynastic guarantees, and international law. He also explores digital historical studies and the interplay between security and future-oriented discourse. Recent work includes "Ruine d'estat" (2020) and co-edited volumes on early modern security frameworks.
Wenzel contributes to peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes, addressing topics like urban security in pre-war Paris, trust in diplomatic contexts, and trans-epochal comparisons of apocalyptic narratives. He supervises the database "Dynastic Marriage Contracts of the Early Modern Period (1500-1800)" and has delivered public lectures on the Huguenots and security discourses.
