Christian Schmidt is a Privatdozent (Private Lecturer) for Philosophy and Research Associate at the Centre for Social Critique at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. He has held this position since 2020, following his habilitation in 2016 at Universität Leipzig with the work 'Probleme der Autonomie. Geschichtliches Handeln und die Institutionalisierung der Freiheit'. Prior to this, he served as a Privatdozent at Universität Leipzig from 2016-2020 and held substitute professorships at Goethe-Universität Frankfurt and Universität Leipzig.
His educational background includes studies in Philosophy and Mathematics at Universität Leipzig and City University London from 1992-1999, followed by a PhD in 2005 with a dissertation on 'Individualität und Eigentum' (Individuality and Property) at Universität Leipzig.
Dr. Schmidt's research interests focus on social philosophy, philosophy of law, and history of philosophy, with particular emphasis on:
- Hegel and the Hegelian Left (especially Marx and Marxism)
- Critical theory authors
- Heidegger
- Foucault
- 20th century French philosophy
His recent publications demonstrate sustained engagement with themes of autonomy, freedom, social critique, and political philosophy, with particular attention to the intersections between historical and contemporary philosophical frameworks. His work spans German idealism, critical social theory, political theology, and contemporary social issues including work, resistance, and institutional structures.
Among his notable academic achievements is being awarded the Dilthey Fellowship by Volkswagenstiftung from 2009-2015 for his project 'Grenzen des Handelns' (Limits of Action). He has also been a member of the Sächsische Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Leipzig (Junges Forum) since 2018.
Dr. Schmidt has been active in international academic collaborations, including research stays at Université de Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, Center Marc Bloch in Berlin, and as a guest professor at Fudan University in Shanghai in 2019.
