Christian Kanzian is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the Department of Christian Philosophy, Faculty of Catholic Theology, University of Innsbruck. He has held this position since 2001 and became Head of the Department in 2017. His research focuses on metaphysics, analytical philosophy, and the history of philosophy, with particular emphasis on ontology, personhood theories, and the philosophy of mind. Kanzian has extensively published on topics such as persistence, tropes, hylomorphism, and Wittgensteinian analysis.
Education includes studies in Munich and Innsbruck, culminating in academic roles since 1990. Notable roles include Executive Director (2000–2006) and President (2006–2015) of the Austrian Wittgenstein Society. His work bridges analytical and continental traditions, addressing contemporary debates in ontology and metaphysics.
Teaching spans courses on philosophical anthropology, Kantian ethics, action theory, and ontology, with over 30 years of academic instruction. Key publications include monographs like Everyday Ontology (2020) and edited volumes such as Realism – Relativism – Constructivism (2015). His research integrates formal ontology with theological and ethical dimensions, reflecting interdisciplinary dialogue.
Kanzian's lab/department focuses on metaphysical foundations and analytic theology, collaborating internationally. Current research explores analytical ontology's applications in theological and ethical frameworks.
