Christian Ilbury is a Lecturer in Sociolinguistics and Co-Director of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) at the University of Edinburgh's School of Philosophy, Psychology, and Language Sciences. He holds a PhD in Linguistics from Queen Mary University of London. His research focuses on digital culture's intersection with language variation and change, particularly among youth and LGBTQ+ communities. Notable projects include investigations into TikTok accent phenomena, WhatsApp conversation dynamics, and linguistic discrimination in higher education.
He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in sociolinguistics, digital communication, and dialect studies. His work has been featured in global media including BBC, The Guardian, and The Sunday Times. He is a member of the ESRC Peer Review College and a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Suffolk. His EDI initiatives include developing accent bias training programs with the 93% Club, addressing linguistic discrimination against state-school students.
