Christian Delles is a Professor of Cardiovascular Prevention and Head of the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health at the University of Glasgow. He is also an Honorary Consultant Physician with NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. His research focuses on cardiovascular disease prevention, with a particular emphasis on hypertension mechanisms, pregnancy-related complications (e.g., preeclampsia), and sex/gender differences in vascular health. He leads the Scottish Heart & Arterial disease Risk Prevention (SHARP) initiative and serves on leadership boards of organizations like the European Society of Hypertension and the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland.
His work bridges fundamental research (e.g., molecular basis of vascular diseases) and clinical translation, including studies on salt-sensitive hypertension, renal dysfunction, and the impact of gender-affirming hormone therapy. He chairs the University’s Clinical Academic Training Advisory Committee, emphasizing education and training in cardiovascular medicine.
Key research groups include Diabetes & Endocrinology, Kidney Disease, Biomarkers, and Vascular Structure & Function. Collaborations involve international studies like the LOCHINVAR project investigating long-term effects of SARS-CoV-2 on cardiovascular systems. His lab integrates proteomics and metabolomics to identify novel biomarkers for cardiovascular and renal diseases.
Recent projects address disparities in healthcare outcomes for LGBTQIA+ populations and the cardiovascular risks of maternal hypertension. He has authored over 300 publications, with a focus on hypertension pathophysiology, translational medicine, and public health strategies to reduce cardiovascular risk.
