Christel Gärtner is an Adjunct Professor of Sociology at the University of Münster, holding affiliations with the Faculty of Education and Social Sciences. She serves on key academic bodies such as the General Assembly of the Excellence Cluster 'Religion and Politics of Pre-Modern and Modern Cultures', and leads major research projects on religious transmission and societal secularization. Her work bridges sociology, religious studies, and media analysis.
Education: Earned her habilitation in social sciences at Frankfurt University (2007), PhD in sociology (2000), and studied cultural anthropology at Frankfurt University (1985–1992). Professional milestones include leadership roles at Bayreuth University (2008), research coordination in WWU Münster's ethics institute (2006–2008), and extensive editorial work for journals like the Zeitschrift für Religionswissenschaft.
Research focuses on religion's role in contemporary society, generational transmission of beliefs, and media's influence on religious perception. Notable projects include analyzing mosque sermons in Germany (Project C3-9) and a three-generation study on religious transmission in families (Project B3-16). Her recent publications emphasize comparative studies of faith across generations and institutional challenges faced by churches.
Teaching includes seminars on right-wing populism and family-based value transmission. She mentors doctoral students in the Integrated Graduate School and leads interdisciplinary research teams in the Excellence Clusters RePliR and Transformation Normative Orders.
Her projects address critical societal issues like religious pluralism, secularization, and Islam in Germany. Collaborations span international institutions such as the John Templeton Foundation and Austrian Documentation Center for Politically Motivated Islamic Extremism.
