Chris Vriezen is a Senior Lecturer in Biological Sciences at Smith College. His research integrates microbial ecology, genomics, and molecular biology to explore antibiotic discovery and bacterial stress responses in soil environments.
- Ph.D., University of Massachusetts Amherst
- M.S., University of Wageningen, Netherlands
- B.S., Larenstein International Agricultural College, Netherlands
Research interests span soil microbiology, microbial antagonism, and stress-induced survival mechanisms in rhizobia and other bacteria. He emphasizes undergraduate research opportunities, particularly for underrepresented students.
Recent publications focus on:
- Antibiotic interactions (2024)
- Extracellular DNAses in bacterial competition (2022)
- Desiccation/salt stress responses (2016-2006)
- Nitrogen fixation symbiosis (2014)
- Pseudomonas-Staphylococcus antagonism (2021)
- Evolution of microbial killing (2009)
His work combines genomic approaches with ecological modeling, using soil isolates from the Smith College MacLeish Field Station. No awards or student advisees are documented in accessible sources.
