Larry J. Halverson is an Associate Professor at Iowa State University's Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. His research focuses on microbial interactions in agroecosystems, biofilm dynamics, and plant-microbe symbiosis. He holds a Ph.D. in Land Resources (University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1991), M.S. in Microbiology (University of Tennessee-Knoxville, 1983), and B.A. in Biology/Chemistry (Luther College, 1981).
Halverson's work explores how microbial communities influence nitrogen dynamics, rhizosphere microbiomes, and extremophile adaptations. Notable contributions include studies on CRISPR-based gene editing in Pseudomonas species, bioelectricity generation via root exudates, and Mars-simulated farming systems. He pioneered methods for analyzing biofilm architecture under desiccation stress and developed microbial sensors for environmental pollutants.
His research integrates advanced techniques like proteomics, genomics, and machine learning to address agricultural sustainability challenges. Recent projects investigate cross-kingdom interactions in arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi hyphospheres and the role of quorum sensing in soil microbial communication. Halverson's innovations include novel nanomaterial probes for biofilm enzyme analysis and miniaturized microbial fuel cells.
Publications span 1983–2025, reflecting four decades of impactful research in microbial ecology. His work bridges fundamental microbiology with applied agricultural solutions, emphasizing sustainable food systems and bioenergy development.
