Prof. Mohamed Hijri is a Full Professor (Professeur titulaire) at the Université de Montréal, holding positions in the Département de sciences biologiques (Faculty of Arts and Science) and leading research at the Institut de recherche en biologie végétale. He specializes in molecular genetics, genomics, and evolutionary biology of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), with a focus on their roles in agriculture and environmental remediation.
- Education: PhD in Biochemistry from University of Bourgogne (1999), postdoc at Universities of Basel and Lausanne (1999–2005).
- Research Interests: Mycorrhizal symbiosis, phytoremediation of contaminated soils, microbial community dynamics, and sustainable agricultural practices.
Key Projects: Co-director of Projet GenoRem (bioremediation solutions), leader of studies on AMF genomic markers, and collaborator on initiatives like the Québec Biodiversity Science Center (CSBQ). His work integrates OMICS technologies to advance understanding of microbial interactions in agroecosystems.
- Grants: Multiple funding sources including CRSNG, FRQNT, and industry partnerships (e.g., Premier Tech).
- Teaching: Courses on environmental microbiology, fungal diversity, and plant pathology.
He has advised over 30 graduate students and published extensively on mycorrhizal fungi’s roles in nutrient cycling, disease resistance, and soil health. His labs focus on developing microbial-based biostimulants and genomic tools for agricultural sustainability.
