Chris Carrillo

Dr. Chris Carrillo is a Professor of Trumpet and Brass/Percussion Area Coordinator at James Madison University's School of Music, where he has served since 2009. He is also principal trumpet of the Madison Brass and an active performer with orchestras such as The New Orchestra of Washington, D.C., Philaharmonie Austin, and Spire Chamber Ensemble. His performance specialties span classical, commercial, and early music, including baroque trumpet with ensembles like Atlanta Baroque and Tempesta di Mare. Dr. Carrillo has performed with renowned artists like Chuck Mangione and toured with Broadway productions such as A Chorus Line and Chicago.

As an educator, he coordinates brass/percussion studies, oversees a trumpet studio of ~28 students, and teaches at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He has presented masterclasses at institutions including the University of Texas at Austin, Michigan State University, and Virginia Commonwealth University, and has led clinics for organizations like the International Trumpet Guild and Texas Music Educators Association.

Educational background includes a doctorate and master’s from The University of Texas at Austin, a bachelor’s in music education from the University of Memphis, and studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. His pedagogical focus integrates classical technique with contemporary performance practices. The JMU Trumpet Studio emphasizes diverse ensemble participation, with opportunities in orchestras, bands, jazz groups, and brass ensembles.

Labs/Teams: Directs the JMU Trumpet Studio and oversees ensembles such as Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, and Brass Quintet. Funds student activities and equipment through donations.
