Dr. Chris Callow is a Senior Lecturer in Medieval History at the University of Birmingham's Department of History, specializing in Viking Age Scandinavia, medieval Iceland, and Old Norse literature. He has held administrative roles including Senior Admissions Tutor and Head of Education, and co-organizes the Midlands Viking Symposium since 2005.
His research examines medieval Icelandic society through saga literature, landscape archaeology, and gender studies. Current projects include a book on Icelandic slavery perceptions and place-name analysis for the Oddi research initiative. He has published extensively on Viking colonization, economic structures, and memory narratives.
Notable awards include the Snorri Sturluson Icelandic Fellowship and Fellowship of the Royal Historical Society. He has supervised 9 PhD students and served on AHRC Peer Review College. Public engagement includes Rescue!History network collaborations and Viking Society for Northern Research participation.
