Matthew Townend is a Professor in the Department of English and Related Literature at the University of York. He previously held roles including Senior Lecturer, Reader, and Lecturer in the same department. His research focuses on Old Norse language and literature, Viking Age England, and the post-medieval reception of medieval themes, particularly Victorian medievalism and regional philology. He has authored influential books such as Language and History in Viking Age England and Viking Age Yorkshire, and is currently writing about Victorian dialect studies and their medievalist underpinnings.
His academic contributions span edited skaldic poetry collections, interdisciplinary studies of Norse-English interactions, and analyses of 19th-century literary figures like W.G. Collingwood. Townend’s work bridges historical linguistics with cultural studies, examining how language reflects identity and historical narratives. He has led projects such as The Vikings and Victorian Lakeland, exploring how Victorians reinterpreted Norse history through art and scholarship.
His research outputs include articles on Tolkien’s literary influences, Viking cosmology, and the legacy of King Cnut. He actively supervises PhD students on topics ranging from medieval Icelandic landscapes to the reception of medieval sagas in modern literature. Townend’s interdisciplinary approach highlights connections between Old Norse poetry, Victorian philology, and the enduring impact of medieval studies on modern thought.
