Chris Beyrer is the Director of the Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI) and holds the Gary Hock Distinguished Professorship in Global Health at Duke University. He is also a Professor of Medicine and Research Professor of Global Health. With over 30 years of experience, his work focuses on HIV/AIDS epidemiology, prevention, and treatment in Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Eastern Europe/Central Asia. Beyrer served as past president of the International AIDS Society and currently advises the U.S. PEPFAR, WHO, and Physicians for Human Rights. He has authored over 400 scientific papers and was recognized as a top cited scientist in 2022.

Research Interests: Beyrer’s work integrates epidemiology with human rights advocacy, emphasizing HIV prevention strategies, global health policy, and the intersection of law and public health. He has pioneered research on marginalized populations, including LGBTQ+ communities and sex workers, advocating for decriminalization to improve health outcomes. His recent focus includes analyzing the impacts of funding cuts on global health programs and HIV/AIDS research.
