Joy Noel Baumgartner is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Global Health and an Associate Professor with tenure at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Social Work. She directs the Global Mental Health Initiative and has held roles at Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI) and FHI 360. Her research focuses on integrating mental health interventions into healthcare systems in low-resource settings, particularly addressing maternal/child health, HIV/AIDS, and implementation science.
Education: PhD in Maternal & Child Health (UNC-Chapel Hill), MSW (UW-Madison), BA in Psychology (UVA). Certifications include Certified Master Social Worker (CMSW) and Certified in Public Health (CPH).
Research interests emphasize culturally adapted interventions for mental health, such as family psychoeducation for schizophrenia in Tanzania and digital health solutions for vaccination access. She has led projects in Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Publications span over 60 peer-reviewed articles, focusing on global mental health, maternal health, and HIV prevention. Awards include the Wallace Kuralt Distinguished Scholar and Fulbright-Hays Grant.
Grants and collaborations include work with USAID, NIH, and the Saving Lives at Birth initiative. She co-leads trials like the KUPAA psychoeducation program in Tanzania and Adolescent Wellness Visits to increase HIV testing.
