Dr. Chris Baumann is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Senckenberg HEP Institute in Tübingen, Germany, with his own DFG grant "Drill a little bit deeper" (Project ID: 539325077). Previously, he worked on the ERC Project MAMBA at the same institute (2024-2025) and was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Geosciences at the University of Tübingen and the University of Glasgow (2023-2024) as part of the Powerful Plants project.
Dr. Baumann's educational background includes:
- PhD in Archaeological Sciences - Zooarchaeology from the University of Tübingen (2017-2020)
- M.Sc. in Archaeological Sciences - Zooarchaeology from the University of Tübingen (2014-2016)
- B.A. in Prehistoric Archaeology and Anthropology from the University of Jena (2007-2011)
Dr. Baumann's research focuses on the ecology of Pleistocene faunal communities in Europe, trophic and ecological niche partitioning of carnivores, anthropogenic impact on animal niches, and early symbiotic relationships between humans and animals. His work particularly examines paleo-synanthropism and domestication processes, using stable isotope analysis and advanced statistical methods to understand human-animal interactions in the deep past.
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on human-animal relationships during the Pleistocene, particularly examining foxes, ravens, and hyenas as indicators of human impact on ecosystems. His research combines zooarchaeological analysis with stable isotope techniques to reconstruct dietary patterns and ecological niches, revealing how human activities shaped animal behavior and community structures thousands of years ago.
Dr. Baumann serves as a Review Editor for Archaeological Isotope Analysis at Frontiers in Environmental Archaeology and is a member of several professional organizations including the Archäozoologenverband (AZV), where he serves as contact person at the University of Tübingen, the Gesellschaft für Urgeschichte (GfU), and the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA).
He has supervised multiple students including Ayenne Sara Akarsu (B.Sc. in Biology) on hair isotope analysis of wildcats and house cats, and Theoni Panagiotopoulou (M.Sc. in Scientific Archaeology) on Magdalenian environments. His current research is supported by a DFG grant "Drill a little bit deeper" (Project ID: 539325077) and previously by the ERC Project MAMBA (Grant agreement ID: 101045245) and the Powerful Plants project (EPSRC grant no. EP/X025160/1).
Dr. Baumann is affiliated with the Biogeology Research Group at the University of Tübingen, led by Prof. Hervé Bocherens, where he contributes to research on human evolution and paleoenvironments. His work bridges archaeology, ecology, and stable isotope analysis to understand long-term human-environment interactions.
