Chris Barrett is the Stephen B. and Janice G. Ashley Professor of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University, affiliated with the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management and the Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy. He holds additional roles as a Senior Faculty Fellow at the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability. His expertise spans agricultural economics, environmental economics, and international development. Barrett received his Doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1994), a Master of Science from the University of Oxford (1985), and a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University (1984).
Research Focus: Barrett’s work addresses poverty, food insecurity, and environmental sustainability, particularly in low-income regions. He explores structural transformation, risk management, and the interplay between economic development and ecological systems. His interdisciplinary approach integrates insights from natural and social sciences to tackle global challenges like malnutrition and climate change.
Awards and Recognition: He is a Member of the National Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, and African Association of Agricultural Economists. His contributions to policy-relevant research have earned multiple national and international accolades.
