David E. Sahn is an International Professor of Economics at Cornell University, holding dual appointments in the Division of Nutritional Sciences and the Department of Economics. He is affiliated with prestigious institutions such as the Fondation for International Development Study and Research (FERDI) and the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA). His research focuses on poverty, malnutrition, human capital formation, and the socioeconomic determinants of health and education in developing countries. Sahn has held roles including Director of the Cornell Food and Nutrition Policy Program and has advised international organizations like the World Bank and UN agencies. He earned a PhD from MIT and a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Michigan.
Research Interests: Sahn’s work emphasizes policy solutions to poverty, malnutrition, and disease in Africa, with particular attention to cognitive/non-cognitive skill impacts on labor markets. His recent studies investigate early academic performance’s lifelong effects, climate-driven migration, and agricultural policies’ role in nutrition. He has published over 140 peer-reviewed works, including seminal books on structural adjustment policies and HIV/AIDS in Africa.
Professional Activities: Sahn teaches courses on development microeconomics, health inequities, and Africa’s economic challenges. He collaborates with African research institutions and governments to integrate evidence into policy. Notable contributions include evaluating Madagascar’s vanilla boom’s economic effects and analyzing youth migration in Senegal.
