Chris Aiken is a Professor of Dance and Chair of the Department of Dance at Smith College. He specializes in dance improvisation, contact improvisation, and eco-poetic creativity. His research explores connections between dance, poetics, ecology, and science. He teaches contemporary technique, choreography, and the scientific foundations of dance.
Education: M.F.A., University of Illinois-Urbana; B.A., Brandeis University.
Research Interests: Integrating ecological awareness with artistic practice, emphasizing collaboration and ethical creativity. His work bridges dance with interdisciplinary fields like philosophy and design.
Awards & Commissions: Guggenheim, Bush, and McKnight Fellowships; commissions from the National Performance Network, Jerome Foundation, and others. Presented globally at venues like Jacob’s Pillow and Vienna’s Impulstanz Festival.
Advisory Roles & Committees: Member of Design Thinking and Kahn faculty advisory boards, Smith’s Committee on Sustainability, and Arts and Humanities Committee.
