Chin-Yi Chan

Chin-Yi Jean Chan is a Professor of Mathematics at Central Michigan University (CMU), affiliated with the Department of Mathematics within the College of Science and Technology. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Utah (2000) and a B.S. in Mathematics from National Taiwan University (1992). His academic career includes roles as Visiting Assistant Professor at Purdue University (2000–2003), Assistant Professor at the University of Arkansas (2003–2007), and subsequent appointments at CMU, culminating in his current Professorship since 2014.

Research Interests: Dr. Chan specializes in Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry, with focus areas including differential operators, Hilbert-Kunz functions, toric face rings, and algebraic singularities. His work bridges abstract algebraic structures with geometric interpretations, often involving collaborations on projects like the Simons Laufer Mathematical Science Institute (SLMath) program (2025) and Structured Quartet Research Ensembles (SQuaRE) initiatives at the American Institute of Mathematics (AIM).

Teaching: He coordinates the MTH 130 Pre-calculus course and the Mathematics Colloquium series at CMU. Courses taught include Algebra (various levels), Calculus sequences, Mathematical Proof, and Ordinary Differential Equations.

Grants & Collaborations: Involved in projects such as the Quadratic Enrichment of Minor Numbers (Simons SLMath, 2025), Minor Forms of Algebraic Singularities (ICERM, 2023), and SQuaRE collaborations on Rings of Differential Operators over Toric Face Rings (since 2021). These projects emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to algebraic structures and their applications.
