John E. Harper is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at The Ohio State University, with appointments on both the Columbus and Newark campuses. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Notre Dame (2008) and has held postdoctoral positions at EPFL, University of Western Ontario, and Purdue University.
- Education: Ph.D. in Mathematics, University of Notre Dame (2008); Graduate studies in Aeronautics and Astronautics, MIT (1996–2002).
His research focuses on homotopy theory and algebraic topology, particularly interactions with structured ring spectra, Goodwillie's homotopy functor calculus, and derived Koszul duality. His work includes foundational contributions to TQ-completion and convergence theorems in homotopy theory.
Recent publications highlight advancements in Bousfield-Kan completions, retractive operadic algebras, and fracture squares for TQ-homology. These works span Structured Ring Spectra, Functor Calculus, and Homotopy Limits.
- Scientific Awards:
- Newark Service Award (2019)
- Newark Teaching Excellence Awards (2024, 2018)
He has mentored numerous PhD and Master’s students, including Oleksii Nikitchenko, Matthew Carr, Duncan Clark, Nikolas Schonsheck, Yu Zhang, and Jacobson Blomquist. His grants include a 2019–2024 Simons Foundation Collaboration Grant for Mathematicians.
