Chiara Murgia is an Adjunct Professor at Monash University's Nutrition and Dietetics Department, affiliated with the Be Active Sleep Eat (BASE) Facility. She holds a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Italy and has held academic positions at Swinburne University (Lecturer) and Monash University. Her research focuses on micronutrient metabolism, nutrigenetics, and nutrigenomics, particularly zinc's role in health and chronic diseases. She has led projects on zinc's vascular protection and meal timing's impact on cardiovascular risk. Murgia has contributed to over 40 peer-reviewed publications and serves on editorial boards for journals like Nutrients and Genes and Nutrition. She received the 2019 Dean’s Award for Excellence in Education for her work on Indigenous curriculum development.
Her research explores how genetic makeup influences dietary responses, using advanced techniques like RNAseq and deep sequencing. Projects include investigating zinc's role in cardiovascular health and dietary timing in shift workers. Murgia collaborates internationally and actively engages in training nutrition professionals in genomic approaches.
