Dr. Patricia Guenther is a Research Professor in the Department of Nutrition & Integrative Physiology at the University of Utah's College of Health and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the School of Medicine. She previously served at the USDA, leading revisions of the Healthy Eating Index and dietary guidelines research. Her research focuses on improving dietary assessment methods, evaluating diet quality indices, and addressing nutritional disparities through policy and education.
Dr. Guenther holds B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in nutrition from Case Western Reserve University and the University of Maryland. She completed a clinical dietetics internship at the University of Michigan and is a registered dietitian. Her work includes developing tools like the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) and Total Nutrient Index (TNI), and assessing dietary supplement use and micronutrient intake patterns in diverse populations.
Her recent studies address sodium reduction strategies in food systems, the impact of school meal policies, and disparities in micronutrient intake during pregnancy. She has received grants from NIH, USDA, and other agencies to evaluate nutrition education programs and dietary assessment methodologies. Dr. Guenther has contributed to national nutrition surveys and policy initiatives, emphasizing the intersection of diet, health equity, and public health.
